About ZEN
the expert system for Palm

The ZEN Expert System software is written by Martyn Croft for BITS on the Side and brings artificial intelligence to the Palm PDA platform. It should run on any PDA with the Palm® OS.

The ZEN Expert System is an expert system engine - that is to say it uses data held in external knowledge bases to turn the Palm into a decision support tool capable of use in any number of areas.  Knowledge bases are able to  cover such diverse areas as identification, classification, advice, and diagnosis. They can be loaded and unloaded at will so that ZEN can deliver many different types of advice as and when needed.

At the moment we have knowledge bases contributed by the BITS on the Side team which are capable of identifying Sharks, advising on Garden plants, choosing a simple Statistical test, and diagnosing a simple Rash. There are many more knowledge bases under development and it's easy to contribute to the growing repository of expertise.

The demonstration system includes a knowledge base able to figure out why the car won't start. And you can watch a rolling demo of that on the guided tour page....  click here

Why ZEN?

Well nothing to do with the religion, or even that classic book 'ZEN and the Art of motorcycle maintenance'...
If you've ever seen the BBC TV series 'Blake's Seven' you'll remember that the Liberator's onboard computer was called ZEN - now there was a computer with serious attitude. Capable of computing an answer to almost every problem, it always seemed to me that ZEN was the product of crossing Mr Spock-like logic with a multi-function scientific calculator. Anyhow, I think ZEN deserves a modest reincarnation. Just call me Avon....
